Faculty Excellence Award in Graduate Mentoring

Nominations are sought for faculty candidates for the Graduate School's Award for Excellence in Graduate Mentoring.

The award is designed to recognize extraordinary performance and achievement in mentoring graduate students. Full-time, tenure-track or tenured faculty at Binghamton University, who hold the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor are eligible.

A selection committee composed of faculty and other campus community members will review nominations and make one recommendation to the Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School. The award winner will receive an honorarium and university-wide recognition, and his/her essay on mentoring will be posted on the web through the Graduate School home page.

Criteria for selection of faculty include superb performance in mentoring graduate students in their chosen profession, including clear evidence beyond formal classroom teaching of helping students become established as independent scholars and professionals. Awardees will be chosen on the basis of excellent guidance of individual research and/or creative projects, willingness to assist graduate students in pursuit of their goals, actively guiding students' research and training, clearly articulating expectations and holding students to high standards, encouraging and helping students to establish their own records of scholarly activity or performance, evidence of supporting student participation in events (e.g., meetings, conferences, committees, performances), ability to involve students in "networking" activities with other professionals and faculty, ability to place students either in other academic settings or professional settings upon completion of the degree, and evidence of students completing their degree programs in a timely fashion.

The nomination dossier must include the following:
  1. Letter of nomination from the chair or graduate director of an academic unit - addressed to the selection committee for Awards for Faculty Excellence in Graduate Mentoring.
  2. An up-to-date curriculum vita.
  3. A list of the nominee's students who have graduated and an indication of their current position.
  4. Letters of support from 5-8 students and 3-5 colleagues.
  5. Nominee-authored statement of mentoring philosophy - one-page limit.

Please submit completed nomination dossier no later than January 30, for the current academic year's award, to: Assistant Dean for Degree Process, AD 134. The awards committee will consist of three faculty and one representative of the Graduate School.
