What is an acceptable TOEFL or IELTS score?

Normally a minimum TOEFL score for admission is 550 for the paper based exam, 213 for the computer-based exam, or 80 for the internet-based exam. Some graduate programs require TOEFL scores above the 550 minimum. Instruction in English as a second language may be required as a condition of admission; students are expected to complete such instruction satisfactorily within two semesters. Normally, teaching assistants need a minimum of 600 for the paper-based exam, 250 for the computer-based exam or 100 for the internet-based exam.

A minimum overall score of 6.5 is required for IELTS, with no individual band below 5.0.

When will I hear about a decision on my application?

If you provide an email address, the Graduate School will notify you via email as soon as your application is received. At this time you will also be provided with a Binghamton ID Number that can be used to track the status (and completeness) of your application on line. If the application is missing any information, you will be notified at this time.

Complete applications will then be forwarded to the appropriate academic department or school for consideration. You will also be notified via email when your application has been forwarded to the academic program.

Decision letters are usually mailed in March through May for applicants seeking fall semester admission and in December for those seeking spring admission. Because international students need to arrange for immigration papers, decision letters are mailed as early as possible. As soon as a decision is made, your file will be updated and you will be able to determine the decision by using your Binghamton ID Number.

Once I'm admitted, will I have to maintain continuous registration?

All graduate students admitted to a degree program must register for each semester (excluding summer) until all degree requirements have been completed. Students who fail to maintain continuous registration, unless granted a formal leave of absence, are ineligible to resume graduate study until they have been readmitted. (Readmission is not automatic.)

Can I take a course at Binghamton University without applying for a degree program?

Yes! Students may take up to 12 credits (sometimes less in certain departments/schools) as a nonmatriculated student. No degrees or graduate assistantships are awarded to nonmatriculated students. Admission for nonmatriculated status requires the completion of a short application form and proof of a bachelor's degree. For more information on nonmatriculated admission, see "Admission and Application Procedures."
